What the heck? I couldn't even find it. I had to click NEW POST for it to force me to the log in area.
Was that by design?
Or am I too blind to see where there is a log in link?

Ah. I see it now. Way up at the upper right. Problem was I had already scrolled down to see where the log in was (which is usually around the forum itself).
I just added a "log in" link to the welcome message that shows up for people not logged in. Thanks for brining this up :P

And yeah, it was meant in good humour, but it's the kind of thing that's cost us interviews with creators lately...
